What Is a Discussant?
Discussant: A subject matter expert who listens carefully to ideas, offers thoughtful commentary, asks questions, and helps move the conversation forward. At Doc G & The Discussants, we've borrowed the term and given it our own twist. Our Discussants aren't just guests, co-hosts, or talking heads. They're regular voices bringing different experiences, opinions, interests, and perspectives to the conversation.
The Show
Doc G & The Discussants On Sabbatical is a professionally produced radio show for curious people. Every week, veteran broadcasters and accomplished professionals explore the people, ideas, music, movies, television, sports, science, history, business, technology, politics, public policy, and cultural moments that shape our world—and occasionally just make us laugh.
One episode might examine a Supreme Court decision or the public policy behind tomorrow's headlines. The next might compare Plato with Aristotle, Adam Smith with Karl Marx, debate whether the Beatles or the Rolling Stones changed music forever, revisit The Godfather or Apocalypse Now, argue over Spielberg, Coppola, or Tarantino, compare carburetors with modern fuel injection, defend classic cars over today's rolling computers, relive Yankees–Cardinals or Celtics–Lakers rivalries, analyze a memorable Dateline investigation, or ask what Big Brother, 90 Day Fiancé, and Love After Lockup reveal about ourselves and the culture that produced them. We aren't interested in subjects simply because they're popular. We're interested in the people, ideas, stories, and entertainment that shape culture, reveal culture, or become part of culture.
We believe the things people watch, listen to, read, argue about, and remember often tell us as much about society as politics or public policy. The show was created around a simple belief:
The truth is more interesting than fiction -- and far more valuable than clichés or talking points.
In an era dominated by outrage, scripted narratives, and predictable opinions, meaningful discussion has become increasingly rare. Too often, people are expected to choose sides before they've examined the evidence, repeat talking points instead of thinking critically, and defend positions rather than test them.
We don't do slogans.
We don't do groupthink.
We ask questions, challenge assumptions, follow evidence wherever it leads, and call nonsense by its proper name.
We have little patience for clichés, intellectual fashion, or arguments that collapse under the weight of evidence. We'll gladly change our minds when the facts demand it, but we won't pretend weak arguments are strong ones simply because they're fashionable.
Our Discussants bring different backgrounds, experiences, expertise, and political perspectives to the table. They won't always agree—and that's the point. Honest disagreement, mutual respect, intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to challenge one another make for far better conversations than rehearsed consensus ever could. Speculation is identified as speculation. Facts are treated as facts. Conventional wisdom is examined. Good ideas are welcomed. Weak ideas are tested.
Some conversations are serious. Some are hilarious. Others wander into places nobody expected. Whether we're discussing critical theory, classic rock, legendary films, scientific discoveries, sporting events, true crime, or the latest cultural phenomenon, our goal remains the same:
To better understand the world around us—or, when appropriate, to expose its absurdity.
If you enjoy humor, genuine curiosity, and people who aren't afraid to challenge conventional wisdom, pull up a chair.
